ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: The coastal wetland Poza de La Arenilla (HCPA), located in Callao (Peru), is an important resting and roosting habitat for aquatic birds, including the family Laridae. However, the wetland is suffering critical degradation due to the development of anthropogenic activities. Objective: To evaluate the spatiotemporal distribution of aquatic birds of the family Laridae reported at HCPA seasonally during the period 2013-2018. Methods: Biweekly sampling was carried out in 11 delimited zones in HCPA between January 2013 and December 2018, during morning and afternoon hours using the total count method. Results: A total of 12 species of Laridae birds were recorded. Leucophaeus pipixcan is the most dominant species in most of the studied zones and its presence is highlighted in summer and spring. The species with the greatest distribution in the wetland was L. pipixcan, Larus dominicanus, and Larus belcheri, which were reported in all the zones studied. The highest average total abundance of species was recorded in summer, while the lowest in winter. A gradual increase in the average abundance of aquatic birds was observed, with these increases being noticeable between the springs and summers from one year to the following. Also, overall richness of the larids was observed to decrease throughout the period evaluated. A similar seasonal variation pattern of the Shannon diversity index (H') was observed from one year to the following, due the fact that Laridae are migratory, and a tendency for the index to decrease with the passage of time. Conclusions: The HCPA plays a key role for the aquatic birds of the region. The presence of five migratory and seven resident species of Laridae has been recorded, which show spatial preferences in different areas of the wetland. Despite a decrease in overall species richness over time, the average abundance of Laridae birds is increasing.

ABSTRACT

Sorubim cuspicaudus, a migratory catfish distributed in the Magdalena, Sinú, and Catatumbo river basins, is categorized as vulnerable to extinction. Production of fingerlings in controlled environments stands as a strategic conservation approach, and larviculture is a critical phase in rearing this species. Probiotics are used for improvement in the critical stages of fingerling production. The study aimed to evaluate the use of probiotics (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis) during the larviculture phase of S. cuspicaudus. Larvae at 42 hours post-hatching (1.5±0.1mg, total length 5.7±0.4mm) were treated with four levels of probiotic inclusion in the water: 0, 5, 10, and 20ppm for 22 days. Water quality remained within suitable ranges for neotropical catfish species larviculture and the parameters assessed were weight gain (Gw), length gain (Gl), specific growth rate (G), survival rate (S), stress resistance (Sr), intestinal fold length (LF), and colony-forming units (CFU) count. Results showed higher Gl (22.23±3.5mm), Gw (40.0±12.6mg), G (14.9±1.5%/day), LP (205±72.7µm), and CFU (118.7±80.9) were found at 20 ppm (p0.05). The findings of this study suggest that probiotics (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis) could be used as an alternative to advance in the S. cuspicaudus larviculture.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The phenomenon of migration generates a series of experiences in the human being that are translated into emotions, feelings, adaptation processes, grief and psycho-pathological processes, and even pathological expressions, represented by clinical pictures of different kinds. Objective: The purpose of this article is to carry out a conceptual and clinical reflection on the semiology around the concept and experience of migration, in order to illustrate the complexity that it entails as a human phenomenon. Methods: A reduced narrative review, circumscribed and restricted to the semiological, psychopathological and clinical aspects of migration. Discussion: The separation, ruptures and losses that derive from migration do not go unnoticed by the individual. They are inscribed in his/her corporality as physiological injuries that affect his/her life and as symbolic injuries that affect his/her existence. Conclusions: Migration supposes a rupture of the totality of being. The context, the perception of others and relationships are cut off from the total unity that is the individual, as if he/she lost half of him/herself.

ABSTRACT

Glucagonoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor of α cells of the pancreas. The tumor excessively secretes glucagon and causes glucagonoma syndrome.70%-90% of patients with glucagonoma will develop necrolytic migratory erythema (NME). We reported a patient of glucagonoma syndrome who was presented to the dermatology outpatient clinic with a 2-year-history of recurrent erythema and scaling on the skin migrating throughout the body. A skin biopsy was performed and resulting features matched with NME, whilst imaging examinations suggested a soft tissue density tumor present in the tail of the pancreas with somatostatin receptor expression and laboratory tests found an elevated levels of serum glucagon. After the diagnosis was confirmed, the patient was treated with surgical resection of the glucagonoma and the skin eruptions resolved rapidly in 4 days. Meanwhile, we reviewed relevant literature published in recent years and summarized its clinical characteristics in order to improve its understanding by clinicians, including clinical manifestations, laboratory and imaging examinations, diagnosis and treatments.

ABSTRACT

This study is mainly based on observation of bird community in Nandur Madhyameshwar area. Nandur Madhyameshwar has a very good biodiversity as well as a wide variety of plants and animals. It is surrounded by large humid terrain and a variety of ?owers and fruit trees, providing food, breeding and nesting support for avian animals. Birds have stable wings, beak, feathers and body temperature. The feathers below keep the birds warm. Contour wings help birds to ?y and attract mates. Birds need a high energy diet to get energy for ?ight. Light bodies and strong muscles help birds to ?y. The pushes the wings to hold the bird in the air. The birds hatch their eggs and keep them in nests. When the chicks come out, they are prehospital or altruistic. A total of 24 different bird species are observed including 14 residents migratory, 2 migratory and 8 residents. It turns out that the respective communities show signi?cant diversity.

ABSTRACT

Background@#One of the eight Ramsar sites in the Philippines is the Las Piňas – Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area(LPPCHEA), and it plays a significant role in the East Asian-Australian Flyway as a stopover site. The migratory birds coming from the north of Asia and Alaska feed on the molluscs in this area. However, there is paucity of literature on the species composition of molluscs found in this critical habitat. Baseline information on these organisms is essential as they are subject to the effects of anthropogenic activities close to and in the wetland, which in turn can have an impact on the ecosystem, particularly the birds foraging in this location. @*Methodology@#The Natural Geography of in-Shore areas (NaGISA) protocol was used for the study. Transects were laid in three sampling sites in Freedom Island and Long Island. The sampling sites were GPS-referenced. A cylinder corer was used to collect mudflat soil, with the corer pushed into the sediment. Soil samples were sieved using a 0.5mm stainless mesh sieve pan, leaving shells and larger sand grains. The molluscs were sorted and identified through taxonomic keys. Sampling was done once for each site in November 2012. @*Results and Discussion@#A total of 61 molluscan species belonging to two classes, 14 orders, and 33 molluscan families were identified and recorded. There were 34 species under the Class Gastropoda that belong to 5 orders and 18 families. For Class Bivalvia, there were 27 species belonging to 8 orders and 15 families. Among the molluscs recorded, 10 species were identified as non-indigenous. It is important to monitor molluscan species as anthropogenic activities may affect these organisms, and in turn, affect the wetland's function for migratory birds. The presence of non-indigenous species may be a potential threat to the ecosystem.@*Conclusion@#Baseline information of the molluscan community in the LPPCHEA was provided by the study. These species provide diet to the endemic and migratory birds in the area. There is a need to monitor these molluscs due to the effects of the man-caused activities close to the area. Also, the non-indigenous species should be studied for their potential to be invasive.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The benign migratory glossitis, also known as geographic tongue, is a normal variant, which presents circular or irregular depapillated superficial areas. According to the literature reviewed, its causes include allergic processes, among these are food allergies. It was decided to carry out this investigation to determine the prevalence of frequent food allergies in these patients using skin tests. Materials and methods: A descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study was carried out. The sample consisted of 27 patients in the period January-August 2018, carriers of geographic tongue who underwent skin-type allergic tests to determine food allergies. Results: 59.3% were women without statistically significant predominance, the most frequent allergic history was allergic rhinitis. The most frequent history of food allergy was to dairy. Regarding the results of the tests for milk and shellfish, they were positive in 55.6%, followed by fish 14.8%, eggs and nuts with 11.1% respectively. The prevalence of positivity for at least one test was 85.2% with a statistically significant predominance over the negative result. Discussion: There is currently not enough literature that discusses the possible etiologies of benign migratory glossitis. Within the allergic history, allergic rhinitis was the most frequent, followed by food allergy. Until now there are few investigations that study this prevalence of food allergies in patients in a specific way. Conclusion: Geographic tongue does not have a predominant epidemiological factor, an allergic history can be a predisposing factor, food allergy can be a trigger for presentation of geographic language.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the genetic evolution and molecular characteristics of H5N8 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) isolated from the poultry in a live poultry market (LPM) in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Methods:Oropharyngeal and cloacal swabs of poultry were collected from a LPM in Urumqi in 2016. AIVs were isolated by inoculating swab samples into chicken embryos. Hemagglutination test and RT-PCR were used to identify the AIVs. The genes of isolated AIVs were amplified with the universal primers of AIV and whole-genome sequencing was also performed. Pairwise sequence alignment and analysis of phylogenetic and molecular characteristics were performed using BLAST, Clustal W, MEGA-X and DNAStar software. Results:Five H5N8 AIVs were isolated from poultry. These strains shared a nucleotide identity of 99.70%-100.00%, which indicated that they were from the same source, and were named XJ-H5N8/2016. Phylogenetic analysis based on hemagglutinin( HA), NS and PB2 genes showed that these isolates were clustered together with H5N8 AIVs isolated from the migratory swans in Hubei, Shanxi and Sanmenxia, and the ducks in India during 2016 to 2017. Moreover, they were also clustered together with H5N6 AIVs isolated from minks in China and the first case of human infection in Fujian. The phylogenetic tree of neuraminidase( NA) gene indicated the five isolates clustered together with H5N8 AIVs isolated from ducks in India in 2016, and the phylogenetic trees of PB1, MP, PA and NP genes showed that they were clustered together with H5N8 AIVs isolated from wild birds and poultry in Egypt, Cameroon, Uganda, Congo and other African countries in 2017. The HA cleavage sites of XJ-H5N8/2016 contained five consecutive basic amino acids, indicating high pathogenicity. Multiple mutations in the genes of XJ-H5N8/2016 could enhance its virulence and pathogenicity to mammals. Conclusions:The five strains of H5N8 AIVs isolated from the LPM were highly pathogenic and closely related to the H5N8 AIVs isolated from migratory birds and poultry in Hubei, Shanxi, Sanmenxia area, Africa and India during 2016 to 2017. Meanwhile, some of the viral genes were also closely related to the H5N6 AIVs isolated from the minks and human in China. Multiple mutations could increase the virulence and pathogenicity of AIVs to mammals, which could pose a potential threat to public health.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Scolopacidae family (Order: Charadriiformes) is one of the most abundant families found in coastal wetlands. La Arenilla coastal wetland has a historical record of 20 scolopacid species; climatic events could affect the distribution and migration of the several species of this taxonomic family, reducing their species richness and abundance. Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between richness and abundance of the species belonging to the Scolopacidae family and both Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and the coastal El Niño index (ICEN) in La Arenilla Coastal Wetland, La Punta, Callao. Methods: Sampling were carried out twice a month, between January 2013 and January 2019 using the Total Count Method in order to determine species abundance (N = 292). A Spearman correlation analysis between abundance, species richness, SST and ICEN was performed, and beta diversity was calculated through the Whittaker index (βw) to analyze both the annual turnover for each season and the seasonal turnover within each year. Results: Two significant correlations were obtained: between SST and abundance and between ICEN and species richness. On the other hand, the ANOSIM test showed seasonal differences in abundance, and the SIMPER test showed that the greatest difference in abundance between seasons was between autumn and spring (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity = 81.57 %), and the minimum difference between winter and spring (Bray-Curtis dissimilarity = 49.86 %). Conclusions: The ecological dynamics of scolopacid communities in La Arenilla coastal wetland face important changes according to the variations in the environmental thermal parameters related to climate change.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to analyze the impacts on the processes of subjectivation of Venezuelan women who, amidst the strong recent migratory flow, find themselves facing a process of (de)territorialization. Discussions are proposed about elements of ethical-political suffering, identity construction and the feminization of migration, based on the production of narratives, with the gender category as a fundamental analyzer of such flows. The interviews with women who were in Bogotá, Colombia, were about the memories of Venezuela, the motivation to leave, the border traffic, the arrival in the city, the daily difficulties of adaptation, and the echoes of this process. In the end, listening to these experiences emerges as a way of confronting the silencing of marginalized voices and reflecting on the reception strategies that have been adopted in the region.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: One of the significant threats to aquatic ecosystems is introducing non-native species in natural environments. This represents one of the principal causes of biodiversity loss in the world. Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is an introduced species in Colombia that shares life characteristics and habitat with endangered native species, such as Ageneiosus pardalis, Sorubim cuspicaudus, and Pseudoplatystoma magdaleniatum. However, its distribution is little-known, and scientists have barely explored the effects on the native fauna. Objectives: To evaluate the P. hypophthalmus invasive potential in some of the Colombian basins, which drain into the Caribbean Sea. Methods: Using records available in various databases, we performed a niche conservatism analysis between the native and introduced records of P. hypophthalmus using the R package Ecospat. Subsequently, we modeled the potential invasion area of P. hypophthalmus and the distribution areas of three native species, performing ecological niche modeling (ENM) using the Maxent algorithm. Finally, we calculated a geographic niche overlap between the non-native and native species. Results: The Ecospat spatial analysis indicated that P. hypophthalmus retains some environmental niche attributes through space. For this reason, we can use ENM as an approximation to its range of distribution in the invaded area. Our results using ENM demonstrated that the four species analyzed prefer low and slightly rocky regions; therefore, the geographical overlap of the three native species' ecological niches and the introduced species exceed 80 %. Conclusions: There are adequate conditions in the study basins to fully establish the species P. hypophthalmus, representing a high risk for aquatic ecosystems and native ichthyofauna. Knowledge of the potential distribution areas is essential to implement control of the species.

ABSTRACT

Benign migratory glossitis, also known as geographic tongue, is characterized by the tongue inflammation and is associated with pain and difficulty eating due to the lingual papillae atrophy. It may appear in association with the fissured tongue. This paper reports the case of a 47-year-old male patient who sought dental care with the main complaint of burning, discomfort, increased sensitivity and a burning sensation on the tongue. He was diagnosed with migratory glossitis associated with a fissured tongue. The patient treatment was performed with an ointment based on triamcinolone acetonide (Omcilon- A Orabase®), which showed improvement in the clinical signs after seven days. The therapy used in this patient was effective in restoring the tongue papillae and improving signs and symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Estuaries are used by waterbirds as foraging, resting and nesting sites, serving also as shelter for migratory birds. The dynamics of this avifauna in an aquatic environment may be associated with the differences of time of day, tide height, temperature, wind speed and use of the site by different species. This study had the objective of evaluating behavioral aspects of aquatic birds, relating the influence of environmental variables with their activities. Bird counts were performed at the mouth of two important rivers of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, during two-hour intervals throughout the day in monthly samplings between June (2015) and May (2016). A total of 44 species were recorded, ten of which were migratory. The most recorded behaviors were foraging and resting. The Kruskal-Wallis analysis indicated no significant difference in behavior between the sampling intervals. The Bray-Curtis similarity test resulted in three groups: 1) - species that foraged most of the time; 2) - species that rested most of the time; and 3) - same time in both activities. The Indicator Species Analysis showed that 17 species were associated with only one microhabitat and 15 species with more than one. The Canonical Correlation Analysis indicated that only tide height, temperature and rainfall variables were correlated with the behaviors performed and only the resting activity was positively correlated with all variables. This may be associated with thermoregulation and the ability of some species to stay in midlitoral at high tide. The results demonstrate that different waterbird species used the studied areas in different ways. Thus, the heterogeneity of microhabitats in an aquatic environment of extreme importance for the coexistence and maintenance of the diversity of waterbirds.

ABSTRACT

Our study assessed the fishers' perception (local ecological knowledge, LEK) concerning environmental impacts on fisheries and fish species in the final portion of Sub-Middle and Lower São Francisco. The river was divided into four areas where 107 fishers from 22 locations (4 states) were surveyed. The dam was the most significant impact on fisheries. The loss of connectivity, changing the environmental complexity, and its secondary effects (e.g., flow control, interruption of migratory routes) were determining factors. Other impacts were pointed out, such as pollution, macrophytes, overfishing, non-native species, and aquaculture. Among migratory species, Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and Salminus franciscanus have been absent from fishery catches for decades. Prochilodus argenteus records in fisheries are likely associated with migration routes to small tributaries. The environmental disturbance favored the establishment of non-native species such as Oreochromis niloticus, Cichla monoculus, and Metynnis lippincottianus along the studied section. Over the final portion of the São Francisco River, the more significant seawater intrusion changed the target species for fisheries activities. Thus, our data validate the importance of fishers' LEK and reinforce the adverse effects of the reservoir cascade on fishing and migratory fishes.(AU)

ABSTRACT

River impoundments for electricity generation lead to environmental changes which severely affect fish migration and species richness. However, little is known about their effect on the genetic structure and population dynamics downstream from the reservoir. Here, we analyzed a set of ten microsatellite loci of Prochilodus lineatus, an important South American migratory fish. Specimens (n = 150) were sampled from five sites in a remnant lotic system that includes sections of the Grande, Pardo and Mogi Guaçu rivers, southeastern Brazil. The data showed that all microsatellites were polymorphic with the allele number per locus ranging from 5 to 32, and genetic diversity (H e ) varied from 0.74 to 0.80. Indices of genetic differentiation and Bayesian analysis showed a significant genetic structure and three genetic clusters inhabiting this river system. An asymmetric gene flow suggests source-sink metapopulation dynamics from tributaries (genetic source) to the main river (genetic sink). A genetic cluster that was not detected in the upper Mogi and Pardo rivers tributaries may indicate there is a "trapped gene pool" downstream from the Porto Colômbia dam. Thus, here we provide new insights into the genetic structure and population dynamics of a migratory fish species in a highly dammed river basin.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract: We investigated spatial and temporal variations in the distribution of fish eggs and larvae in the Guareí River, a free-flowing tributary located in the upper section of the Jurumirim Reservoir, Paranapanema River, Brazil. Fish eggs and larvae were sampled ~ fortnightly from November 2017 to March 2018 (Cycle 1), and from November 2018 to March 2019 (Cycle 2), at three sites distributed along the entire course of the Guareí River. We collected 859 fish eggs and 1,340 larvae, comprising 19 taxa. We found reproductive activity of several fish species in the Guareí River, including long-distance migrants. However, there was no spatial differences in the assemblage structure and densities of fish eggs and larvae along the channel of Guareí River. We recorded temporal differences in larvae density only in Cycle 2. The consistent capture of fish eggs and larvae in two reproductive cycles is strong evidence that this river is a spawning site for a variety of fish species. Thus, we recommend maintaining its natural flow regime.

ABSTRACT

This article aims to debate a new concept within the migration studies field which is named "crisis migration", shedding light on the processes, motives and factors that influence the movement of populations affected by crisis. Introducing other interrelated categories - such as eventuality, immobility and non-choice - , the article is guided by a methodological and conceptual perspective that understands crisis as a driver to migration. Therefore it seeks to defy the idea that migrations generate crisis to nation-states receiving large contingents of people. This idea has been consolidated by the term "migration crisis" especially disseminated in the midia and political discourses. Our discussion of the new concept was based on bibliographic review, focusing on recent researchs in respect to crisis migration and its unfoldings not only in the local but also in the international scenario. Finally, we bring about the challenges as well as the contributions of this concept, which involve unsolved central debates within the migration field.
